An in-depth look at what makes Miami Style Salsa Casino different from other styles of Cuban Salsa. It's origins, unique rhythmic lead and follow, and some lost Miami turns from the 90's.

Salsa Nick was fortunate enough to be able to study with several of the original and innovative dancers in the Miami Salsa Casino scene. Omar Cabrillo, Henry Herrera, and Ramani Nicola. He was able to study at all the well-known Miami Salsa schools; Salsa Connection, Salsa Racing, Salsa Kings, and Salsa Lovers. In addition, he partnered with Gigi de Calle Ocho for the instructional video "The Quick and Dirty Guide to Salsa" vol 4.

We will be presenting many of the unique steps that make Miami style different from other styles of Salsa and Casino. Also many of the lost turns from the early days of Salsa Connection and Salsa Racing.

**Please: We ask that all students be familiar with Miami version of Vacilia.**

We often find ourselves as Casino (Cuban) style dancers, dancing to complex fast Timba Salsa in small crowded clubs. Usually the best music and dancers are found in the most crowded of clubs. At times, the music calls for a break from open and larger movements. Still wanting to dance and express ourselves we have developed a workshop series that focuses on the closed position in Cuban (Casino) Style Salsa. Our techniques are drawn from a variety of sources including Danzon, Son, Casino, Salsa Linea, Tango, and Tai Chi. Our workshop starts with the basics adapted to crowded intimate dance floors, and covers traveling, rhythm changes, posture, connection, communication, turnillos, adapting complex moves to club situations, Paseas, Habaneras, and Suelta Cerca. Learn to lead and follow anything in a relaxed friendly environment without all that yanking, pushing and pulling to communicate with each other.

About Salsa Nick

For over 14 years, Nick was a martial arts and movement instructor. Partner dancing and Salsa were a natural progression. For the past 12 years, Nick has been teaching Salsa and in particular, Cuban style Salsa, bringing to it his existing concepts of connection, balance, and fluidity. Nick combines decades of Cuban tradition with modern movement concepts of space, timing, and flow. Presently, he teaches Salsa Cubana (Casino), Rueda de Casino, cha cha cha, Son, and several martial arts. Nick studies yearly with Yanek Revilla, Karelia Despaigne and Casino.com from Santiago de Cuba. Nick has trained and taught all over the U.S., including extended periods in Miami, New York, and Texas. He has also taught in Hawaii , Venezuela, Mexico and throughout California. He has taught at numerous salsa congresses, festivals and cruises and is the co-star of "The Quick And Dirty Guide To Salsa, vol. 4". Re-Cap of Salsa Rueda Class 8/21/12

A quick re-cap of last nights fabulous Salsa Rueda class

The 7 to 8 class reviewed: 70, enchufla y suenalo, and setentacito, and we added enchufla pa'l medio con dos, and of course "22".  Next week we will make sure to review those moves as well as add some new ones.

The 8 to 9 class reviewed vacilia, 70 miami, 70 complicado.  We added 7/70, and 13 and then we danced a whole bunch.

Many thanks to Tomasito for showing us enchufla y suenalo, setentacito, and 13 at the 2012 Las Vegas Salsa Rueda Festival.

Check us out next week at Addis Habana, 366 Grand Ave in Oakland. See my class schedule to the left.
