Although there is no Advanced Salsa Rueda Class tonight, I invite everybody to join me tonight at The Little Baobob at 19th and mission. Cigar Bar: a waste of a great space.

Saturday, December 15th, 2007

I wonder if perhaps the marketing department of Cigar Bar has no communication with the music scheduling. Cigar Bar has all the trappings of a great Salsa or dance/music space. Wide open spaces that flow nicely into the indoor areas. Decent drinks, if albeit overpriced (hey it is SF). Wonderful California design and colors. A superb band even: “La Familia Son“, one of the few bands in the area still playing Son and Son Montunos. Sounds great doesn’t it.

Now let’s stick the club in North Beach where there is no parking and the patrons idea of culture is doing shooters at Senor Frog’s in Tijuana on spring break. Perhaps in between lap dances at the various strip clubs they all decided that they needed to soak up some traditional Cuban culture. Indeed the place is full of people more intent on drinking and swinging their partners around like weapons then listening to and appreciating music. Is that enough to ruin a good spot to listen to music, no wait theres more. Now we’ll add to it that Cigar Bar is one of the few places that lets you smoke inside, anywhere, on the dance floor. So here we have musicians and dancers struggling to play and breath in a crowded room full of drunk unappreciative Frat boys. I would say I am never going back but that would be a lie. Unfourtunatly Cigar Bar books some great acts that I love to hear and dance to so yes I will undoubtedly be back and nursing black and blue feet the next morning.

On the other hand. La Taza is tonight. A great venue: good food and drinks, a suberb DJ, quality dance instruction, and people who won’t step on you.
